It takes exactly that long for Joan to interpret their behavior. Not only have they been here, wherever here is, awhile, but they've also become close. One might even say 'kissing close'. If it hadn't been for the completely gallant effort on Auggie's part to make sure Annie wouldn't have a problem with him kissing her, Annie's absolute (deplorable) inability to contain her giddiness and that wifely soothing gesture would still have given them away completely. Any married woman with half a brain in her head would see the signs of a romantic relationship all over them.

That, however interesting it might be, is not her concern at the moment and it suits her not to reveal that she's noticed it. Instead, she taps her fingers impatiently on her forearm. "Today, please."

Her gaze sweeps the room and the pure ice in it makes a few onlookers bury their noses in their books, but others are bolder. She lowers her voice, pitching it for Annie and Auggie, and arches both eyebrows high and demanding with the imperious let's get a move on, people cock of her head: "We're starting to attract attention."
